Police arrested a 30-year-old man for attempted murder on a peace officer after he threatened and fought a deputy that was trying to arrest him for public intoxication, a Sheriff’s official reported today.
Ernesto Perez of Corona was walking around in the area of Hillside Avenue and Sixth Street in Jurupa Valley. A deputy also responded to the area in reference to a suspicious person report that had been sent in about Perez around 6:33 p.m. that evening, according to a Riverside County Sheriff’s Report.
The deputy determined Perez was intoxicated and unable to care for himself. However, when he attempted to arrest Perez for public intoxication, Perez fought back, according to Sgt. Mike Portillo.
Perez was able to, “remove the deputy’s baton and at one point during the fight, threatened to kill the deputy,” Portillo said.
Eventually the deputy was able to wrestle the baton from Perez’ grasp and it fell to the ground. Bystanders came to the deputy’s aid in apprehending Perez, according to Portillo.
Both Perez and the deputy sustained minor injuries from the skirmish and were treated on scene. Perez was booked at Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside.
