More Coverage, More Style: The One Piece is Back

As the weather quickly hits scorching temperatures, bathing suit season is officially upon us. Though styles have come in and out every season for the last few years, they all had one thing in common- they were two pieces. Whether in the form of bikinis or tankinis, there’s no doubting that two piece suits have been the style for the last 5 years. Well ladies, get ready for a shake up! The hottest looks this season are coming in one pieces, and I have a feeling this trend is going to have some longevity to it.

I know, I know – one pieces get slammed and shunned often times because they are seen as suits for “old women”, and more frumpy than sexy. But this year’s designs challenge even the most brutal critic by offering not only a variety of suits, but a variety of themes in these suits. And I’d bet that everyone can find at least one that appeals to their taste.

With fresh, innovative design from well-known and trusted brands such as DKNY, Juicy Couture, Marc by Marc Jacobs, and Nanette Lepore leading the runway, retail stores everywhere have been pushing aside the two piece to make way for the original one piece. Personally, I have always been a fan of the one piece. Since they have more coverage, this allows for a larger canvas, so to speak, for designers. More space means more design – more unique looks.

There are a lot of benefits to rocking the one suit trend. A lot of this season’s designs have a range of “secret” tricks to help you look your best at the beach, even if you missed your gym routine for the last few weeks. One of the most sought after tricks is hidden tummy control, thanks to smartly placed ‘power mesh’ fabric, cut, and boning – all of which is done with very comfortable material. Many suits also have hidden (but sill comfortable) underwire for added support. This is perfect for women who are in need of a little lift but want it hidden in a streamlined look.

Besides the cosmetic benefits, one pieces are also a great option if you like to take a more active role during the summer other than working on your tan. Whether you’re playing sand volleyball, gettig in some exercise doing laps in the local pool, or even just jogging along the shore, these suits are ready to get the job done without any awkward pulling and adjusting.

Now that I’ve made my case for the one piece, let your eyes decide the rest. The four major themes that seem to be consistent among designers are fun, sporty, sexy, and sweet.

Fun retro suits such as these one are making a definite reappearance. The fun pattern and secure halter straps make it a definite must have for the old soul with a unique twist of retro flair. Find it here at Modcloth.

The second suit has an interesting cut out that will definitely make you more noticeable. Urban Outfitters

This suit from American Eagle’s Aerie is like the Little Black Dress of swimsuits. It covers everywhere smoothly, making it easy to move in, but has a cut and straps that are modern and young looking.

Seriously, how cute is that bow? Love it! This piece from Urban Outfitters definitely wins ‘Most Original” in my opinion.
